President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu provided assurance to the people of ADh. Omadhoo on Sunday that his administration will launch harbor and coastal protection projects in the island early next year, and complete both projects simultaneously.
President Muizzu provided the assurance in a visit to Omadhoo on Sunday afternoon - as part of a two-day tour of islands in ADh. Atoll.
At a rally in Omadhoo, the president of the island’s council, Ibrahim Adil said the delay in the redevelopment of the island’s harbor remains the biggest concern of the residents.
According to Adil, the harbor – built some 25 years ago – is currently in a state of severe disrepair – resulting in damages to boats.
He said that the redevelopment of the harbor had remained stalled with only half of the quay wall built.
The second biggest concern for Omadhoo is the erosion of its beaches – a problem that Adil said arose with the redevelopment works on the island’s harbor.
“The coastal protection project has now been awarded to MTCC. I was very pleased with this. But our greatest concern now is we don’t know when it will start,” he said.
Addressing the same rally, President Muizzu provided assurance that his administration will run the projects.
He said that the administration had not been able to start the harbor project this year due to lack of budget allocation, but said that next year “will be different.”
“Both of these projects were signed but remained stalled. Therefore, we will provide a solution to the issue [coastal erosion] simultaneously with the harbor project. We will complete both projects simultaneously. The project will be run next year. As early as possible,” he said.
President Muizzu said that his administration will also address additional concerns raised by Omadhoo next year.
