The former chairman of the Elections Commission (EC), Fuad Thaufeeq has been appointed as the new Maldivian ambassador to Thailand.

Fuad was presented with his letter of appointment by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu in a ceremony held at the President’s Office on Monday morning.

He had been serving as ambassador-at-large at the Foreign Ministry up until his new appointment.

Fuad received parliamentary approval for the appointment with a unanimous vote of 58 on December 9 – a week after the Foreign Relations Committee gave its backing.

Fuad’s tenure at the EC came to an end on November 23, after having served the maximum of two five-year terms.

In 2008, Fuad became a member of the Maldives’ very first Elections Commission, set up following the enactment of the new Constitution. He served at the EC from 2008 to 2014 and from 2019 to 2024.

He also previously worked at the Foreign Ministry and at SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) Secretariat.
