Former chairman of the Elections Commission (EC), Fuad Thaufeeq has secured the backing of the Parliament for appointment as the new Maldivian ambassador to Thailand.
The letter by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu nominating Fuad for the role was read at the Parliament on November 25.
The Parliament gave its approval to Fuad with a unanimous vote of 58 on Monday afternoon – a week after the Foreign Relations Committee gave its backing.
Fuad’s tenure at the EC came to an end on November 23, after having served the maximum of two five-year terms.
In 2008, Fuad became a member of the Maldives’ very first Elections Commission, set up following the enactment of the new Constitution. He served at the EC from 2008 to 2014 and from 2019 to 2024.
He also previously worked at the Foreign Ministry and at SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) Secretariat.
