Maldives National University Students Union (MNUSU) has extended gratitude to President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu or ensuring the continuance of the studies of students studying in the School of Medicine at Dharumavantha School without any disruptions, as appealed by the union.
The government’s decision to switch the studies of MNU students studying in the School of Medicine at Dharumavantha Hospital to an alternate location has been met with huge concern, particularly by the union.
MNUSU, in a statement on Friday, thanked the President for reflecting the benefit of the students in his decision, citing the matter to have been a concern for not just students studying in the School of Medicine but rather all students in the university. MNSU said the decision had provided relief to all.
It was announced On Thursday that students enrolled in the School of Medicine will be able to continue their education at Dharumavantha Hospital as before.
As per the statement by the President’s Office, following a letter from MNSU to the President on April 23rd, the Minister at the President's Office for Strategic Communications arranged a meeting at the President's Office with representatives from relevant Government agencies and student representatives, as requested by the President.
The President's Office states that the students, during the meeting, expressed concerns regarding the possible loss of access to space at Dharumavantha Hospital for educational purposes. Underscoring that the President's decision would reflect on his strong prioritization of student issues, particularly in offering opportunities for higher education students, representatives from both the university's students' union and the School of Medicine expressed confidence that he would heed the voices of higher education students and implement the most effective solutions to their concerns.
Following the discussions, the President had assured prompt addressing of the students' concerns and implementing arrangements to avoid any disruptions to their studies.
The President’s Office states President Muizzu remains committed to addressing matters concerning students and improving healthcare quality within the constraints of the government’s financial state. As such, work is presently underway to implement a specialized educational facility that is equipped with state-of-the-art amenities required for research by students School of Medicine.
The decision to switch the studies of students studying in the School of Medicine at Dharumavantha Hospital to an alternate location had been attributed to plans to increase the capacity of the hospital as it is in the process of introducing new healthcare services to improve patient care.
