The coalition running the government, PPM-PNC, has decided to postpone its primary to elect candidates who will contest next year’s parliamentary elections on behalf of the coalition to January 20th.

A statement on Friday announcing the postponement attributed the decision to the earlier date coinciding with school holidays during which many members of the public have planned to travel overseas for various purposes.

Therewith, the statement read that the decision to postpone the primary was taken at the request of many candidates contesting the primary as well as general members of the parties.

It was also noted that the ordered list of names of candidates, after verifying their eligibility, will be publicized next week.

The voters’ list and the timing of the vote will also be announced after this, the statement added.

The coalition’s primary had initially been slated for Saturday, December 23rd.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has expressed confidence that the coalition will secure the parliament’s supermajority in the election.
