Republic Day function postponed

The ceremony that is held in celebration of Republic Day has been postponed.

The ceremony was originally to be held tonight, but it has been postponed to tomorrow night following the fatal fire that occurred last night, as per the home ministry. This decision was taken by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

A fire started on the first floor of M. Nirufehi, which houses a garage on the ground floor, and resulted in the death of 10 expatriate workers, out at least 38 people, that were living on the first floor.

The incident was reported to MNDF at 12:30 am.

All relevant government organizations are investigating this incident with renewed vigour, and are trying to help the people affected by the fire to the best of their abilities, according to the government.

The home ministry has requested all invitees of the ceremony that was to be held tonight to attend the ceremony tomorrow.

People who have done exceptional work for the Maldives will receive the Presidential Award in tomorrow’s ceremony.
