State Minister for Homeland Security and Technology Dr. Mohamed Kinaanath states over 250,000 people currently use the government’s digital ID, eFaas, adding it will be developed into a vital tool to deliver digital services.
While speaking during the inaugural session of Stakeholder Consultation Workshop on the First Draft of the Maldives Digital Identity Bill, Kinaanath described eFaas as one of the most comprehensive and credible digital tools developed by the National Centre for Information Technology (NCIT) to enhance the quality of public services.
He emphasized the priority placed on driving digital transformation through the usage of eFaas on a national scale.
“eFaas is Maldives’ national digital identity and a vital component of our national infrastructure. This is as it paves the way for secure and equal access to services such as health, banking and education,” he added.
Highlighting some of the successes of eFaas, Kinaanath underscored that over 250,000 people currently use the platform. Moreover, he detailed that eFaas is recognized and accepted among international organizations such as World Bank and Asian Development Bank, with other nations expressing interest in replicating its success.
Kinaanath noted that the current administration places a high priority on further developing the eFaas system, including equipping it with the necessary laws and regulations to ensure services are delivered within a comprehensive framework.

In this regard, he revealed that efforts are underway to formulate crucial bills under Maldives’ digital transformation policy. According to Kinaanath, the data security bill and cyber security bill included among this have already been sent to the Attorney General’s Office with efforts underway to formulate draft Maldives 2.0 and artificial intelligence bills.
Digital ID, eFaas, was introduced with digitalized services during former president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration.
The service has been continuously expanded since then, with criminal and debt record clearance being introduced via eFaas recently.
