Additional desks set up to collect biometric data of expats

Home Ministry has set up additional desks at Kalaafanu School in Male’ and Rehendhi School in Hulhumale’ to collect the biometric data of expatriates employed in the greater Male’ area.

The biometric data collected from expatriates include photos and fingerprints of all ten fingers.

The desks in Kalaafaanu School and Rehendhi School were set up in addition to the joint operation centre established at the National Centre for Information Technology (NCIT) and the desk at the North Harbor.

The desks at Kalaafanu School will be operational from 9:30am to 16:00pm and 21:30pm to 23:30pm every day except Friday from March 9th to Shawwal 7th.

The desks at Rehendhi School will be operational from 21:30pm to 00:30pm every day except Friday from today onward, until Shawwal 7th.

According to the Home Ministry, the additional desks were placed in order to boost the speed of the operation and ensure convenience for employers.

Home Ministry’s ‘Operation Kurangi’ - an initiative to collect the biometric data of migrant workers in the Maldives – was launched on May 2, 2024, at K. Himmafushi. The operation also aims to ensure that expatriate workers residing in the Maldives are in compliance with the relevant laws and regulations. 

According to the latest census, 132,371 out of some 500,000 Maldivian population accounts for expatriates. A large percentage of the country’s expatriate population is undocumented.
