President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has announced the decision to establish a specialized drug rehabilitation center for juveniles.
He made the announcement at the inauguration of the National Drug Agency Open Day 2019 this Saturday.
Speaking at the inauguration, President Solih stressed the need to separate juvenile drug addicts and provide them with specialized treatment and rehabilitation services.
He noted that Maldives currently lacked a specialized drug rehab center for juveniles despite the law making such a center compulsory, leading to lack of specialized rehab services available for juvenile drug addicts.
“The government has made the decision to establish a center to rehabilitate such juveniles. Construction of the center will, In Sha Allah, begin within this year,” said President Solih.
He said the government planned on training technical staff on rehabilitating juvenile drug addicts and their families once the construction of the center begins.
The government has announced the decision to relocate National Drug Agency headquarters to Hulhumale’ in order to accommodate more patients, acquire modern resources, and establish a more balanced treatment mechanism.
President Solih said the new headquarters will be developed will better services, a modern detox clinic, and a business center to showcase products by drug addicts.
He said the new headquarters will also provide specialized services to juveniles and women, a modern laboratory, a national research center, and free counselling services.
