36 candidates have applied for the two vacancies at Maldives Broadcasting Commission (BroadCom).
The two vacancies follow resignation of two of BroadCom’s members in June.
The names of the applicants were sent to the Independent Institutions Committee of the Parliament for evaluation on Tuesday evening.
Some of the applicants include veteran local journalists.
THE CANDIDATES:
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, in his letter to the Parliament enclosed with the names of the applicants, said that the list of applicants was ordered as per his own review.
The two vacancies at BroadCom follow the abrupt resignations of Ismail Sofwan, its former Vice President, on June 26; and Hassan Nabah on June 30.
The BroadCom, riddled with allegations of political corruption and bias, is under investigation by the Independent Institutions Committee.
The committee passed a motion to call for a parliamentary vote to impeach BroadCom’s President Mohamed Shaheeb and Vice President Fathimath Zaina on July 24. The impeachment motion is yet to be scheduled for reasons which are unclear at this point.
