Parliament approves Zam’ath for BroadCom membership

The Parliament on Monday approved Zam’ath Ahmed Waheed, who had topped the committee evaluation of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s nominees, for membership at the Maldives Broadcasting Commission (BroadCom).

Zam’ath secured the Parliament’s backing with a unanimous vote of 54 on Monday morning.

Zam’ath currently serves as the Chief Executive Office at the Islamic Ministry. She holds a Master’s degree in journalism, and previously worked as a report at the Public Service Media (PSM) as well as several private media outlets.

She is set to replace Aminath Ameena, whose term at the BroadCom expired this week.

Zam’ath had topped the list of six candidates sent by President Muizzu on May 12 for consideration as a member of the BroadCom.

The candidates:

  • Zam’ath Ahmed Waheed, Mala, GDh. Thinadhoo
  • Ibrahim Ashraf, V. Mashaveli, K. Male’
  • Moosa Rilwan, M. Haavilaa, K. Male’
  • Zeena Zahir, Athirige, GDh. Gadhdhoo
  • Ali Yusuf, Baarana, Lh. Hinnavaru
  • Shimla Ahmed, Aastralge, S. Hithadhoo

The Independent Institutions Committee, which vetted the candidates, had awarded her the highest points among the candidates with 89.29 points. Her closest competitor, PSM’s former managing director Zeena Zahir, received 84.57 points.
