The Family Court is hearing a case involving a woman who is married to three different men, according to a court official.

The Parliament’s Regulations Committee on Wednesday summoned officials from the Family Court for a meeting to discuss a petition filed by North Galolhu MP Mohamed Ibrahim (Kudu) seeking to raise the MVR 2,000 child support allowance.

At the meeting, committee members expressed concern over an increase in cases of failure to pay child support and failure to register marriages performed overseas.

Family Court’s legal officer Ahmed Mausoom echoed the sentiment, and said there are some very regrettable family situations in the Maldives.

“There’s a case involving one woman who is married to three men. One woman who has three different husbands,” he said.

Mausoom explained that the woman in question had her first marriage performed overseas. He said that the woman failed to register the marriage and it was treated as “non-existent.” She then got married for a second time overseas.

“…We had the documents regarding the first marriage. But the marriage wasn’t registered and before a decision could be made, she married another person. And before a decision could be made about the second marriage, she got married again for a third time,” he said.

Mausoom said that such incidents are dangerous and could lead to unknown descent.

He said that while the Maldives has rules regarding overseas marriages, many people fail to follow those rules.

Mausoom said that while it is mandatory to seek permission from the Family Court when getting married overseas, many people fail to follow this step.

According to the United Nations, the Maldives has the highest divorce rate in the world with 10.97 divorces per 1,000 inhabitants per year.
