104 homes in Kurendhoo significantly damaged in flooding caused by rain

National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) states 104 homes in Lh. Kurendhoo were impacted by floods causing significant damage amid monsoon rains.

Sharing the latest updates regarding weather, NDMA said Kurendhoo was wholly flooded following heavy rains on Monday subsequent to which efforts were undertaken to drain the roads by using pumps and digging trenches to create a water flow.

NDMA said the floods were completely drained by 12:00am Tuesday morning, with assistance from Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF).

As per the authority, they are presently undertaking efforts to identify untenantable houses from the ones impacted by flooding with assistance from Kurendhoo Council in order to facilitate temporary housing and food for the residents.

A total of 104 houses in Kurendhoo were impacted by flooding, taking in significant damage, said NDMA, adding the Council was performing damage assessment.

Speaking with Sun on Monday night, Kurendhoo Council member Hussain Zahir said two-thirds of the houses on the island were impacted by flooding, with 98 percent of them reporting damages.

Zahir said the island experienced non-stop heavy rain from 12:00pm to 15:00pm on Monday. He noted that the Council had commenced draining efforts at 14:00pm after the flood level began to rise. However, Zahir stressed they were only able to bring the flooding under control at approximately 17:00pm, and that too, with MNDF’s assistance.

Flooding and damages were also reported from other islands according to NDMA which identified them as S. Feydhoo, Dh. Bandidhoo and Dh. Hulhudheli.

The authority states other atolls across the Maldives have not been deeply impacted.
