Maldives Police Service on Thursday evening launched an inspection after receiving reports of a kidnapped woman held hostage at a Maafannu district residence.
‘Sun’ Online had learned the woman was held hostage at Maafannu Mirihimaa. She had been threatened at knife point by her kidnapper.
CCTV footage and video clips shared on social media showed the kidnapper had come out from the house while holding the woman hostage at knife point. The kidnapper then attempted to flee on a motorbike with the hostage riding it.
Police officers on site had initially attempted to step away after the kidnapper repeatedly threatened to kill his hostage with knife, but eventually caught and bound him.
The law enforcement authority also confirmed to media that they were looking into the incident, later revealed that they had learned the woman was beaten by the kidnapper.
Although the woman had sustained injuries when police officers used force to apprehend the kidnapper, authorities said that she is now safe and in stable condition. She was treated at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).
The kidnapper was treated at ADK Hospital for sustaining injuries during the scuffle with police.
Police said they have launched an investigation into the case to acquire more details.
