The opposition PPM-PNC coalition’s candidate, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans to separate the fisheries and agriculture ministry, in order to create a specific ministry for agriculture, and a separate one for fisheries, if elected to office.
Muizzu announced the plan during a campaign rally in R. Dhuvaafaru on Tuesday.
Muizzu described agriculture as one of Maldives’ key economic sectors, and one full of opportunities.
He said that it is largely ignored by the fisheries and agriculture ministry.
“There are many products that can be produced in Maldives; many products that can be produced enough for the Maldives,” he said.
Muizzu said he plans on expanding the agriculture sector under his policy for a self-sufficient economy.
He promised to introduce micro loans for agriculture, and other such opportunities.
