President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced on Sunday that the government will provide housing for Hirimaradhoo residents willing to relocate to Hanimaadhoo within one and a half years.

This decision follows the government's plan to centralize the two islands.

During his official tour of Haa Dhaalu atoll, with Hirimaradhoo as his first stop, President Muizzu addressed residents, stating that each family with a plot of land in Hirimaradhoo would receive a house in Hanimaadhoo. He assured that it would be completed within a maximum of 18 months, and keys would be handed over upon completion of municipal services.

While emphasizing that relocation is voluntary, President Muizzu stated, “Will finish it within 18 months maximum and hand it over. The land will be given in the same manner that keys are handed to the people. We will not compel any citizen to relocate. This opportunity is only for those who wish to move.” He also promised economic benefits and a special allowance for those who choose to relocate.

The government's decision to relocate Hirimaradhoo residents to H.Dh. Hanimaadhoo in February of this year came after the Hirimaradhoo council had requested relocation to K. Thulusdhoo.

The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has been awarded the contract to provide housing and municipal services for the relocated population within six years. The agreement was signed by HDC Managing Director Brigadier General (Retd) Ali Zuhair and Construction and Housing Minister Dr. Abdullah Muthalib.

Hirimaradhoo has a population of 589, though approximately 200 people currently reside on the island due to migration. Hanimaadhoo's population, according to the latest census, is 2,645.

Earlier, Hanimaadhoo Council Vice-President Firaq Mohamed expressed concerns, stating that the government had not held discussions with the council on the matter. He noted that half of Hanimaadhoo's islanders opposed the relocation due to potential negative impacts on social moral standards and law and order.

President Muizzu has previously stated his belief that balancing population with development is the only long-term solution for the Maldives. Minister Muthalib has also emphasized that consolidating populations on larger islands through new housing units would significantly reduce state expenditure and improve service quality.
