Education Ministry, on Thursday, contacted Amin Construction Private Limited to design and construct the new building for Arabiyya School an annex to the current Jamaluddin School building.

The agreement pertaining to the project was signed during a special ceremony held at Education Ministry on Thursday, by Education Minister Dr. Aishath Ali and Amin Construction’s Company Secretary Ibrahim Nihad.

Amin Construction was awarded the MVR 168 million project to be completed within 420 days.

Education Ministry said that the project falls under Public Sector Investment Program (PSIP) projects for the year.

Speaking during the signing ceremony, Education Minister Aishath said that the goal is to complete work on both schools by late December 2023, and put the new buildings to use when school reopens for second term in 2024.

Education Ministry said that efforts were underway to demolish old Jamaaluddin School building at the land plots where both buildings contracted to Amin Construction will be built at. The Ministry said that demolition and cleaning the premise will be completed by October 14, and handed over the Ministry.

Arabiyya School’s new building will comprise of 40 classrooms, a multipurpose hall and four elevators. The annex to current Jamaluddin School building will comprise of 34 classrooms, two elevators and restrooms.

Apart from this, an employee parking area has been included in the design for staff at both schools.

Parents of Arabiyya School students had protested in December last year, over the large cracks in the school building raising questions as to the structural integrity of the building and students’ safety.

As a result, Education Ministry announced their decision to temporarily transfer Arabiyya School students to Izzudheen School – a decision which the parents had opposed. Following this, the Ministry said they were seeking land from Male’ City to construct a new building to relocate Arabiyya School. President Solih had decided to allocate the old Jamaluddin land plot to develop a new building for Arabiyya School on December 20.

At present, Arabiyya School students study at the temporary building which Foreign Ministry had used previously.
