Police urged people against taking the law into their own hands on Wednesday, warning that people who carry out vigilante attacks will be investigated and taken legal action against.

The appeal comes after a teacher from Ghaazee School accused of showing porn to a school student was beaten by a mob and made to strip down to his underwear in Hulhumale’ on Tuesday night.

The incident was recorded on video.

In a statement on Wednesday night, police said acts of violence against suspected criminals posed a threat to the community, and was of deep concern to the agency.

“The laws and regulations of Maldives clearly prescribe how to investigate and punish criminals and suspects of crimes,” said the police.

Police urged the people against similar vigilante attacks.

“We will investigate and take legal action against people who commit such crimes,” said the police.
