Three arrested for attacking police officer

Three individuals have been arrested in connection to attacking and assaulting a police officer.

Maldives Police Service said that the incident took place on last Wednesday night – amidst a police officer overseeing the traffic trying to stop four individuals who were speeding on two motorcycles in a manner that creates fear amongst people and threatens public safety near the intersection where Majeeedhee Magu meets Dhilbaaharu Magu.

They further detailed that three of the four individuals on the motorcycles – have been arrested.

The three individuals arrested in connection to the case have been identified as Mohamed Viaam, 27, Venus Villa S. Feydhoo; Hassan Aalim, 22, Faanafilaage, S. Hithadhoo and Shan Abdulla, 20, Dhaftharu No. 2841, Male’ City.

Police said that the three individuals belong to a gang operating in Male’ City – adding that all three of them have criminal records.

They further said when the police officer who was overseeing the traffic at that time had instructed the individuals to stop the vehicles – they had refused to comply, and attempted to obstruct justice in addition to attacking and assaulting the officer.

“Furthermore, the police officer was terrorized and threatened,” the Police added.

When the three arrested were brought before the Criminal Court today for a remand hearing – all of them were remanded in police custody for seven days.

Police stressed that they will take strict legal action against individuals who form groups and operate on Male’ streets in a manner that threatens public order and creates fear amongst the people.

They added that they will take all actions possible within the confinements of law to stop such acts.
