Police have arrested an individual suspected of sexually abusing an 11-year-old girl at a northern island in the Maldives.

They confirmed the identity of the suspect as a 37-year-old Maldivian man. He was arrested under a court order tonight.

Earlier today, Police said that a case regarding the sexual abuse of a minor in an island within the North Police Division (Noonu Atoll, Raa Atoll, Baa Atoll & Lhaviyani Atoll) had been reported to them.

They further detailed that the case involved the sexual abuse of an 11-year-old girl by an individual in a position of trust – and it was reported to them on last Tuesday.

At the end of last month – another sexual abuse case involving a 13-year old in a southern island had come to light. A 42-year-old man was arrested in connection to the case – and was remanded in custody pending outcome of trial when he was presented before the court.
