Suspect arrested in sexual abuse of 3-year-old girl

The police have arrested a suspect in the sexual abuse of a three-year-old girl.

The suspect, identified as a 24-year-old Maldivian male, was arrested at approximately 10:45 pm this Thursday.

The case is under investigation by the Police Family and Child Protection Wing’s Crimes Against Children Department as well as Gender Ministry.

The police said in a statement earlier this Thursday that the victim was taken to a doctor assess whether she sustained any injuries, and to a psychologist to assess whether she suffers mental trauma from her ordeal.

The police stressed that they are treating the case as a serious crime, and working on finding evidence and witnesses.

Gender Ministry said the victim has been moved to a safe environment, and the police have provided assurance they will take necessary action in response to the case.
