A man arrested on suspicion of sexually abusing three young girls – two of them his own daughters – has been remanded in custody of the police for 30 days.
The case was reported to the police on early Sunday. The suspect – a 42-year-old Maldivian man – was arrested the same day.
He was presented before the court for his remand hearing on Monday.
A police spokesperson said that the judge remanded him in custody of the police for 30 days.
According to the police, all three victims in the case are related to the suspect. Two of the victims are his daughters, while the third victim was identified as “a relative”.
Crimes against children are treated by the police as serious offenses. The law enforcement agency does not disclose the island where such crimes take place in order to protect the identity of victims.
Special Provisions Act to Deal with Child Sex Offenders, which declares special provisions to deal with child sex offenders both at investigative and trial stages, prescribes a prison sentence of 15 to 18 years, if the person who carried out the offense holds a position of authority over the victim.
