A woman who was assisted by the Police after seeking assistance from officers on the road has been identified as a victim of sexual assault after being taken to the hospital.

In a message to the media on Monday, the Police said a woman who sought their assistance on a Male’ road on Sunday evening was escorted Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).

The Police added that the hospital informed them that same day that the woman had been sexually assaulted.

While the victim has been identified as a 24-year-old woman, the case is being investigated by the Police as a serious matter.

According to the Police, the victim is currently receiving medical care and psychosocial support.

Despite the continued prevalence of sexual misconduct in the Maldives—where many victims are children— the rate of reported cases remains significantly low.
