387 people fined in one week for curfew violation

Maldives Police Service has announced that 387 people were fined over the last one-week for violation of the curfew in effect in the greater Male’ region.

The 10:00 pm to 05:00 am curfew in Male’ City and suburban Hulhumale’ and Vilimale’ was imposed a measure to limit public movement and control the coronavirus outbreak.

Violation of the curfew order is punishable by a reprimand or MVR 1,000 fine.

Maldives Police Service announced on Saturday that the police reprimanded 899 people and fined 387 people for violation of the curfew order over the last one-week period from August 15 to August 21.

The most people were fined on August 19. 120 people were fined on that day.

Masks when out in public have also been made mandatory in the greater Male’ region. First violation of the mask order is punishable by a reprimand, and repeated violation is punishable by a MVR 1,000 fine.

The police have appealed to the public to adhere to the measures in place to curb the spread of the new coronavirus.

Maldives has 6,564 confirmed coronavirus cases, including 194 new cases on Friday. 4,012 patients have since recovered, while 26 have died from complications.

The country currently has 2,527 active cases. 166 coronavirus patients are hospitalized.
