Police have announced changes to the permits issued for shopping purposes to the public.
From now on, the permits will be changed so that holders will be able to shop once a week during the lockdown and curfew order imposed in the city. The capital has been in a state of lockdown and curfew since April 15, when the first case of the virus was identified in the city.
Authorities are taking stringent measures as experts project a surge of cases by the end of this month.
The timings for shopping will be informed to the permit holders via a text message, said Police who added that holders will not have to reregister.
Previously permit holders could shop every three days during specific hours and in specific areas of the city. The details of the location and timings are visible from the electronic permit issued.
Violators of the lockdown order are fined by the Police and sometimes taken into custody if repeat offenders.
Access to the Sinamale’ Bridge has also been limited by the Police. From tonight onwards, residents will not be able to access the bridge between 1:00 and 9:00. Only essential workers will be allowed to use the bridge during this time.
