Maldives Police Service has stated that its officers are feeding stray cats living on the streets of the capital during the COVID-19 lockdown.

The capital has been under lockdown and curfew since April 15, after a community case of the virus was identified in the populous city.

It was a common practice among cat lovers and others to feed the stray cats in different locations across the capital. Due to the curfew, the furry friends on the streets are left with no one to feed them, which has prompted the Police to take the initiative in addition to maintaining the security of the capital.

The industrial village area of Male’ City is home to a large number of stray cats and Police officers have been pictured feeding the cats in the area. A tweet sent out from the official account of Maldives Police stated that its officers have not forgotten about the cats. The furry felines roaming the streets have also found a new sense of freedom with the lack of humans.

Police officers have also taken the initiative to feed pigeons in the Republic Square of the capital.
