The Parliament, this Monday, voted to initiate a negligence probe into Maldives Police Service over its investigation into the abduction of journalist Ahmed Rilwan Abdulla.
The Security Services Committee, in its original report regarding the issue, recommended the Parliament not to pursue a negligence probe as the abduction case was already under investigation by Presidential Commission for Investigations of Murders and Enforced Disappearances.
However, speaking during the debate into the report, Thulhaadhoo MP Hisaan Hussain stressed that the negligence by MPS in its investigation into the abduction posed a major issue.
She said that though the abduction is under investigation by the presidential commission, negligence by MPS in its investigation should be treated and probed as a separate issue.
Hisaan recommended revising the report to establish that the Parliament must probe the issue.
The revision passed with the unanimous consensus of 67 parliamentarians present at the Parliament this Monday afternoon.
As soon as the revision passed, the Speaker announced that it has now been established that the Parliament must initiate a negligence probe into MPS over its investigation into the abduction.
