Missing motorcycles rising monthly; 110 recovered in October

While Male' Police Command recovered a large amount of property worth MVR 5 million last month, police statistics show that most of it consisted of missing motorcycles.

The statistics of the work done by Male' Police Command last month were released on Wednesday.

According to the figures, police recovered lost and stolen property worth MVR 5 million last month. The items recovered included:

  • MVR 4,885,300 — a total of 110 motorcycles  

  • MVR 302,830 — a total of 31 phones  

  • MVR 62,565 — a total of 12 electronic devices  

  • 32 money theft case — totaling MVR 324,344  

  • 65 other cases — totaling MVR 164,866

Motorcycles were also the most commonly recovered item in September. Police retrieved 90 motorcycles that month.

In other areas, two foreigners were handed over to Immigration last month.

In terms of vehicle-towing, a total of 520 vehicles were towed from the city last month, compared to 702 in the previous month.

Last month, police towed vehicles for various reasons including:

  • Illegal parking: 247  

  • Driving without a license: 108

  • Driving dangerously: 21  

  • Driving with changed registration number: 18

  • In connection with various issues: 16

  • Run with original modifications: 10  

  • Abandoned: 5

At the same time, 1,139 hours and eight minutes were spent on foot patrols last month. A total of 26,262 premises were inspected. 75 vehicle checkpoints were set up and vehicles were inspected. 16 visibility and traffic management points were established last month.

In addition, a total of 4,633 people were stopped and questioned by frontline police. Of these, 4,555 had criminal records. The remaining 78 had clean records.

Police also conducted 1,364 community interactions with the public as part of the neighborhood policing service.

The Male' region, home to a large portion of the Maldivian population, continues to report the highest number of crime cases. Police are increasing their street presence to tackle the issue, and access to assistance is being made easier.
