President Dr Mohamed Muizzu held discussions on Sunday with the Rector of the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), Professor Emeritus Datuk Dr Osman Bakar, to explore enhanced collaboration in higher education, particularly in PhD programmes.
The meeting took place at the President’s Office during the Rector’s courtesy visit to the Maldives. President Muizzu and Professor Bakar exchanged views on strengthening academic ties between the two countries, with a focus on doctoral-level cooperation and institutional partnerships.
President Muizzu expressed gratitude for IIUM’s continued support to Maldivian students pursuing higher education in Malaysia. Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to expanding educational collaboration and exploring new avenues for joint initiatives.
The visit builds on longstanding ties between the Maldives and IIUM. Notably, during President Muizzu’s official visit to Malaysia in April 2024, the university conferred upon him an honorary doctorate in Islamic Leadership and Civil Development.
The meeting concluded with mutual interest in advancing academic exchange and fostering long-term cooperation in the field of education.
