A police officer who is under investigation for failing to report a road accident that he was involved in back in September has been suspended.
The road accident in question took place at around 1:00 am on September 13 near the Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) office located in Fithuroanu Magu, Hulhumale’, when the car the 33-year-old officer was driving crashed into a motorcycle.
While the officer drove the motorcyclist to the hospital in his car, he failed to report the accident to the police.
The police said that they were therefore treating the accident as a hit-and-run, and arrested the 33-year-old. However, the police did not specify when he was arrested.
A police spokesperson said on Thursday that the officer in question was suspended on Tuesday.
The 33-year-old officer was granted conditional release by the Criminal Court on Wednesday.
At the hearing, the investigator told the court that while offerdrove the victim to the hospital, he failed to report the accident to the police and fled afterwards.
The court, citing his employment at the police force, and the circumstances surrounding the incident, decided that there were no grounds to keep him detained for the investigation.
