Two expats arrested with large number of cigarettes and money

Two expatriates have been arrested on suspicion of engaging in unlawful business with a large number of cigarette boxes, tobacco packets and money.

Maldives Police Service said the two expatriates were arrested on Monday as part of the national operation underway, cracking down on illegal migrants involved in unlawful business and criminal activities. The operation is conducted in collaboration with Maldives Immigration and Maldives Customs Service.

In this regard, the Police detailed that the two expatriates were arrested on suspicion of engaging in unlawful business during a search of buildings in Hulhumale’, where illegal migrants reside.

They have been identified as two Bangladeshi nationals: 37-year-old MD Shamim Mia and 22-year-old Ala Uddin.

The Police reported that a large number of cigarette boxes, tobacco packets, and cash in both Maldivian Rufiyaa and US Dollars—believed to be proceeds from the illegal sale of these items—were found during a search of the suspects' residence.

A total of 13 police officers, three Immigration officers and three Customs officers participated in Monday’s operation.

Maldives Immigration announced the commencement of the operation targeting both foreign nationals and Maldivians involved in unlawful businesses on Sunday.

The initial phase will focus on the Male' area, followed by densely populated islands in the second phase, and finally, smaller populated islands in the third phase.

The operation was initially announced by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on Saturday evening. He stated that its objective is to identify and close down businesses operated illegally by foreigners in the Maldives. The President also indicated that the operation, which will prioritize larger populations, will include the deportation of those apprehended.
