President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said on Thursday that he will look into the matter of the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) Parliamentary Group (PG) leader Ibrahim Falah calling out for some journalists to be impaled.

Debating the media bill in an extraordinary parliamentary sitting on Wednesday, Falah said journalists should be ‘impaled’ instead of imprisoned.

The case has also been reported to the police by the Maldives Journalists' Association (MJA).

Journalists gathered at the President's Office on Thursday to protest against the Media Bill, as they did Wednesday. When the President left office, journalists followed him with questions until he entered Muliaage, the presidential residence.

When asked repeatedly by several journalists about Falah's remarks, the President only said, “I will look into it”.

He did not say anything else. It is worth mentioning that the President said that Falah made a 'very low’ speech when he met members of MJA on Thursday.

MJA has also reported the matter to the police. The association has asked for an investigation and action to be taken.

Falah's remarks have been condemned by journalists and many others. Meanwhile, Ibrahim Saeed, a political appointee at the Sports Ministry, who condemned the remarks has been sacked on Thursday too.

Falah's remarks came after some media posted an alleged homosexual video and images of a look-alike to Falah. It was a video that had circulated on social media, and it is not confirmed if any registered news outlet published the story.
