Japan provides USD 1.3mn grant to Maldives to support scholarship program

Japan has provided the Maldives with a grant aid of 194 million Japanese Yen (approximately USD 1.3 million), to support the continuation of scholarship opportunities offered to Maldivian students.

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Sheryna Abdul Samad and Japanese Ambassador Ishigami Rumiko signed the exchange of notes for the grant aid on Tuesday, at a ceremony held at the Foreign Affairs headquarters in Male’.

According to the Foreign Ministry, the grant aid will support the continuation of the Japanese Project for Human Resource Development Scholarship (JDS) program.

The new grant will cover six scholarships this year to the Maldivian students.

The JDS project was implemented by Japan in 2020 to further enhancing human resource development in the Maldives.

The signing ceremony on Tuesday was attended by State Minister for Higher Education, Dr.  Abdul Raheem Hasan, and senior officials from the Foreign Ministry, Higher Education Ministry, Civil Service Commission, the Japanese embassy, and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
