Nationwide rain expected during school holidays

Maldives Metrological Service (Met Office) states scattered showers are expected across various Maldivian regions over the next five days.

Schools closed for holidays following the conclusion of the first term on Thursday. The holidays are expected to generate increased travel.

Speaking to Sun on Thursday, Met Office said Maldives was presently experiencing monsoon rain with scattered showers expected across various Maldivian regions over the next five days. However, the Office noted that wind intensity will decrease starting from Friday evening.

“Winds will become less intense starting from tomorrow evening. However, scattered showers are expected somewhat in the next five days,” Met Office said.

The weather forecasting body urged the public, especially seafarers, to exercise caution in light of the weather conditions. Rough seas have been with waves of four to seven feet.

Notably, Met Office has issued a white alert from 12:00pm to 18:00pm for the majority of the nation; from Haa Dhaalu Atoll to Gaafu Alifu Atoll.

The alert warns of heavy rain, thunderstorms, strong winds of 19 to 24 miles per hour and rough seas for these regions during the aforesaid period.

As schools closed for first term holidays on Thursday, they are set to reopen for the second term on Sunday, October 6th.
