Nationwide alert for swell wave surges as Hulhangu Monsoon gathers strength

The national weather agency issued a nationwide white alert for swell wave surges on Thursday, as the active Southwest Monsoon, locally known as the Hulhangu Monsoon, gathers strength.

The white alert is in place from 02:00 pm to until at least 06:00 pm Thursday.

The Maldives Meteorological Service forecasts possible swell wave surges across the country during this period.

The agency forecasts that the Male’ area will be affected by thunderstorms and rough seas with waves of 4-7 feet.

 The alert comes a day after the weather agency issued an advisory, warning that the Hulhangu Monsoon is set to gather strength for the next four days starting Thursday, bringing strong winds, rough seas and fairly widespread rain across the country.

FORECAST CONDITIONS:

  • Winds: Strong average winds and gusty conditions are expected.
  • Seas: Sea conditions, particularly in open sea, are predicted to be rough becoming very rough during showers.
  • Weather: Fairly widespread rain and thundershowers.
  • Wave surges: Possibility of wave surges during high tides.

The weather agency advises all, including seafarers and members of the general public, to stay updated with the latest forecasts and alerts.
