The police have recovered MVR 2.2 million stolen in various scams over the last eight months, according to the chief police spokesperson.

The Maldives has seen a rise in scams in recent months, with victims cheated out of large sums of money.

In a post on X on Thursday, the chief police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner of Police Ahmed Shifan said that the police have recovered MVR 2.2 million stolen in scams in the first eight months of this year.

“It's unfortunate that many people continue to be vulnerable to scammers and fall victim to their schemes,” he added.

Shifan did not specify how much was stolen in scams.

Earlier this year, the police told reporters that over MVR 27 million had been stolen in scams in the two months from December through January. The figure is therefore expected to be significantly higher now.

Statistics released by the police show that over MVR 20 million was stolen in 1,661 cases of scams reported to the agency last year.

Over 500 bank accounts were frozen this year due to such cases.
