Maldives Zakat House states they commenced the distribution of Zakat al-Mal on Friday to persons registered as poor and destitute.
Zakat House said they have reviewed the register of poor and destitute in place since 2021 and begun depositing the funds to the bank accounts of those eligible.
MVR 4,000 will be deposited as Zakat al-Mal this year, marking the highest to date. A total of 3,183 people nationwide will be receiving the funds.
Prior to this, the highest amount distributed as Zakat al-Mal was MVR 3,500 per person in 2013, followed by MVR 3,000 per person in 2023 and MVR 2,700 per person in 2021.
Zakat House states aid is provided to the poor and destitute via the Zakat Fund directly and indirectly. In this regard, aid is provided for essential needs and medical purposes in addition to during emergency circumstances and extenuating circumstances.
Over MVR 16 million have been issued from the Zakat Fund so far this year as aid for medical purposes.
The Nisab was Zakat al-Mal is presently set at MVR 9,353. Zakat al-Mal is accepted by Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA).
