The Ministry of Islamic Affairs on Wednesday signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Qatar Red Crescent Society to donate USD 100,000 from Maldives Zakat House to the Gazan people.

The Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed signed on behalf ot eh ministry while Qatar Red Crescent Society’s Secretary General Faisal Mohamed Al-Emadi signed on behalf of the organization.

The donation, through Qatar Red Crescent Society, will be extended to Gaza in two payments.

The Islamic Ministry confirmed the donation will be utilized in providing clean water and to fund the initiatives led by Qatar Red Crescent Society in Gaza. The ministry also added this is the first international donation extended by the authority, and said providing relief to the Gazan people is carried under the instructions of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

The current administration established a separate entity by the name of Maldives Zakat House, operated under the purview of the Islamic Ministry, with the aim of fostering love among the public towards the Islamic sacred act of Zakat.

Zakat is an Islamic religious obligation to donate a portion of their wealth to charitable causes.

Previously, state-run Public Service Media (PSM) raised MVR 19 million through its ‘Falastheena eku Dhivehin’ (Maldivians with Palestine) telethon. The donation was handed over from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).
