Fenaka-run projects in islands to be transferred to MWSC

The government has decided to cancel all contracts awarded to the Fenaka Corporation for infrastructure development projects in islands and contract it to the Male’ Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) instead, says Infrastructure Minister Dr. Abdulla Muthalib.

He shared the decision in response to questions at a parliamentary sitting on Tuesday morning.

Muthalib has previously said that multiple infrastructure projects awarded to Fenaka during the previous administration remained stalled.  

He told the Parliament on Tuesday that Fenaka does not have the capacity to develop water and sewerage systems in islands, but is a service provider.

“The government decided to assign them [Fenaka] that [as a service provider] and terminate all contracts awarded to Fenaka and contract it to MWSC through direct negotiations,” he said.

Muthalib said that Fenaka-run infrastructure projects in 20 islands will be contracted to MWSC.

He said the government is working on having new contracts signed before the end of this month.

Muthalib said that establishing essential services is a top priority for the government, and they have not, and will not halt any projects to establish water and sewerage services.

‘We will not halt or suspend projects in any island. We will start projects as soon as possible [and provide services] to the people,” he said.

During a visit to the Parliament last month, Muthalib said that the government does not have the funds to run all projects planned for the year, and is collaborating with other relevant authorities to prioritize projects.
