Pres set to depart for 4th SIDS conference on Friday

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu is set to depart for Antigua and Barbuda on Friday, to attend the fourth conference of Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

SIDS comprise of 37 UN member nations, and 20 associate members of regional commissions, positioned at the forefront of multiple global crises, notably climate change.

The fourth SIDS conference, held once a decade, is scheduled to take place in Barbuda from May 27th to 30th.

At a press briefing on Thursday, Heena Waleed said President Muizzu will deliver seven statements at the conference.

He will also meet world leaders, and engage in strengthening ties on multiple areas of mutual interest.

Heena said Maldives will organize three events at the conference.

The first event will focus on the progress made by Maldives in its path to digitalization, and its use in the country’s development.

The second event will focus on the development of Hulhumale’, and the third is a regional side event.

President Muizzu will be accompanied in the conference by a delegation to top officials.

This includes: Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer; Environment Minister Toriq Ibrahim; Housing Minister Dr. Ali Haidar; Climate Envoy Ali Shareef; HDC’s Managing Director Ibrahim Fazul Rasheed; and Ambassador-at-large Dr. Ali Naseer Mohamed.

Under the overarching theme of “charting the course toward resilient prosperity", the conference will aim at assessing the ability of SIDS to achieve sustainable development, including the 2030 Agenda, and its Sustainable Development Goals.

President Muizzu was invited to attend the conference by Antiguan Prime Minister, Gaston Brown, during the COP28 summit.
