Pro-govt candidates will produce results: Pres

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on Saturday, has said electing candidates with dissenting ideals will not produce favorable outcomes, and assured pro-government candidates will produce results.

The Maldives President made the remarks while speaking at the closing ceremony for the PPM/PNC campaign activities for the parliamentary election scheduled for Sunday, April 21st, 2024.

During his speech to close the campaign activities, President Muizzu said the Maldives lost its sovereign freedom, faced economic constraints, and was on an overall 'bad' trajectory.

He said the Maldivian public changed the country's course during the last presidential election, ensuring Maldives regained its full freedom and sovereign identity.

"But there is one more step before achieving this. Due to how Maldives Constitution grants discretion to the parliament in shaping up the country's future, nothing can be achieved without its involvement," President Muizzu commented.

He urged the public to be responsible when voting for the candidates at the parliamentary election on Sunday, and not to rely on personal and familial connections. President Muizzu called to elect PPM/PNC candidates to ensure the government's vision is realized.

While speaking, the Maldives head of state said electing candidates who oppose the government's policy will not bear positive results, and added the pro-government candidates will be allegiant the current administration's cause.

"This is not a tug-o-war, with government on one side and the parliament on the other. When the rope is stretched from both ends, it would snap and break, that is the people in this case," President Muizzu anecdoted.

"That is not what we want, and why we were elected. We are trying to fulfill the pledges we made to the public."

A total of 368 pro-government and opposition candidates will be contending in the election on Sunday, out of which 89 MPs belong to the ruling PNC.

Earlier, President Muizzu shared his confidence the ruling party would secure at least 62 seats in the 20th assembly of the parliament.
