President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu says he plans on modifying the ongoing airport development project in B. Thulhaadhoo in accordance with the wishes of the island’s residents, and develop the airport to modern standards.

The former administration contracted Sri Lanka’s Capital Marine and Civil Construction Company (CMCCC) to reclaim land for airport development projects in three islands, including Thulhaadhoo, on July 12.

Addressing a rally in Thulhaadhoo on Monday afternoon, President Muizzu expressed discontentment over the pace of the project.

He said that he will speed up the project, and modify it.

He said the people of Thulhaadhoo will enjoy the benefits of a modern airport once the project is completed with the changes.

“This has been awarded to a contractor. But I believe there are certain changes that must be made to the scope and for additional improvements,” he said.

President Muizzu said that along with the project, the government will also run a land reclamation project, which he said was crucial to the long-term development of the island.

The projects he announced for the island includes:

  • A road development project
  • The construction of 100 housing units this year
  • Upgrade of the healthcare system

President Muizzu said that Thulhaadhoo is crucial to the development of the larger B. Atoll. He said that he will run developmental projects in all islands, with the involvement of local communities.
