B. Thulaadhoo residents protest inside Thulhaadhoo Council building over delays in handing over completed rowhouses on September 18, 2025.
The permanent list of recipients of the row houses developed in B. Thulhaadhoo, which are completed, has been published amidst protest by Thulhaadhoo residents inside the island’s council building.
A protestor who spoke to Sun earlier said that the protest was launched over Thulhaadhoo Council’s failure to publish the final list of recipients of the 100 rowhouses developed on the island on Thursday, as promised.
The protest, which began last night, escalated this morning when demonstrators forced their way into the Council building and continued their protest on the premises. As a result, the Council’s operations had come to a complete standstill.
At 14:00pm this afternoon, Thulhaadhoo Council released the list of permanent recipients of the row houses.
The list includes the final recipients of 100 housing units developed in Thulhaadhoo, which includes 92 Category-A units and eight Category-B units.
Speaking with Sun earlier, Thulhaadhoo Council’s deputy president Mohamed Ali Manik said the relevant committee failed to come to a conclusion regarding publishing the final list of rowhouse recipients during a meeting held last night.
However, Manik noted that the committee is planning to hold another meeting as soon as possible in order to reach a decision at the earliest, as the issue involves the interests of residents.
Thulhaadhoo, which is home to some 1,600 residents, has been reclaimed.
The majority in Thulhaadhoo Council is held by opposition MDP. However, the island is represented at the Parliament by independently elected Abdul Hannan Aboobakr, who is aligned with the government.
