Maradhoo MP Ibrahim Shareef says he joined the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) after years with the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) well aware that it could cost him his Parliament seat.

Shareef, who is accompanying President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu in his current visit to Addu City, made the comment on Sunday evening, while addressing a gathering for residents of Maradhoo and Maradhoo-Feydhoo.

Shareef said he decided to join PNC because the main opposition MDP harbored plans to destabilize the country. He said he was fine with losing his seat over the decision.

“Why did I join PNC? Because [I am against] plans by the current leadership of the MDP to bankrupt this country,” he said.

Shareef said he remains steadfast by President Muizzu’s side.

He described President Muizzu as someone who always takes time to work closely with the people and answer their questions despite his busy schedule.

Shareef has one of 13 lawmakers who left the MDP to join the PNC on December 28.

He previously rejected allegations that he is a political sellout, insisting that he has always prioritized national interests above all.
