Maradhoo MP Ibrahim Shareef (Mavota) has resigned from main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) on Monday night.

A senior official from MDP confirmed Shareef’s resignation to Sun.

However, the reason behind his resignation is unclear at the moment. Sun was unsuccessful in its efforts to obtain a comment from Shareef regarding his resignation as he did not answer his phone.

Shareef first entered the political arena as a member of MDP. He left the party to join Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) where he worked alongside former president Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom on the frontline of the party’s political activities.

However, he later rejoined MDP.

Shareef is among the parliamentarians who have served in the parliament for the longest consecutive years. He has also chaired parliamentary sitting as a senior member.
