Police urge against filing false reports for amusement

The police have issued a plea to the public, urging them to refrain from filing false police reports.

The plea comes in light of a recent surge in missing persons cases from across various islands and the greater Male' area.

Over the past four months, a total of eight cases have been reported, with four of them occurring within the past two months.

Police spokesperson Yunus Sobah emphasized the seriousness of such incidents in an interview with the Sun.

He stated that filing reports of missing persons as a form of amusement instills fear among the public and hampers the police's ability to fulfill their responsibilities.

Sobah pointed out past tragic incidents that have caused harm to individuals, underscoring the need for swift action when a missing person case is reported. He further explained that comprehensive investigations are carried out, including high-risk analysis, background checks, and internal risk assessments.

Regarding cases of false reports, Yunus Sobah mentioned that while they do occur, the police are yet to determine an appropriate course of action in such instances.

To prevent misunderstandings and unnecessary panic, the police stress the importance of individuals informing their families and friends about their whereabouts and travel plans.

It is worth noting that in most missing persons cases, individuals eventually return to their families voluntarily. Tragic outcomes are rare in such situations.
