Man arrested for assaulting woman in Madaveli jailed pending trial’s end

GDh. Madaveli Magistrate Court, on Wednesday, remanded the 33-year-old man arrested for assaulting a woman on the island in custody pending the outcome of his trial.

The man was arrested at the scene of the assault on Tuesday in the case which has garnered nationwide attention subsequent to a video of the incident that went viral on social media. 

The video shows the man kicking the woman out of a house by shoving her. She is eventually thrown to the road, following which the man drags her across the road further away from the house. He also hit and punches her simultaneously while dragging her. Despite the abundance of bystanders, including children, who were watching the scene – the man continued to assault the woman. Many were also seen videoing the assault instead of helping the woman, enraging the public.

The man is later seen subdued by a man who arrives at the scene, running, shortly after which police officers arrive at the scene.

The woman who was assaulted, upon being discharged from the health centre following treatment, was granted protection by the Gender Ministry. The case was also submitted to the Police on behalf of the Ministry.
