Zenysha: Violence against women predominant in Maldives

Crimes against women are predominant in the Maldives, says Minister of Gender and Family, Aminath Zenysha Shahid Zaki.

Speaking during a seminar held for Filipino workers on challenges faced in the workplace, Zenysha said every one in three women suffers a form of domestic violence or sexual violence in their lifetime.

"Foreign workers in Maldives also suffer such crimes, even if its infrequent. Women achieve financial independence when they travel to other countries for employment. But they also suffer such crimes,” said Zenysha.

The seminar by Ministry of Gender and Family and the Embassy of Philippines was held to to educate and create awareness on labor related concerns including sexual harassment and domestic violence.

Approximately 4,000 Filipinos work in Maldives in different fields.
