Pole and line fishing plays a key role in protection of marine life and sustainable use of the oceans, states Maldivian Environment Minister Aminath Shauna.

In an interview to Sun on Saturday, on occasion of Fishermen’s Day, Shauna spoke about the link between the fisheries industry and the environment.

Shauna said that Maldives, being one of the most vulnerable to climate change, must be careful in using natural resources.

She noted that the pole and line fishing technique used in Maldives is the best fishing technique, which ensures zero bycatch.

“We are a country which practices the most sustainable fishing technique in the world. We must continue with pole and line,” she said.

Shauna said it is also important to promoting Blue Economy.

“As we face a myriad of challenges due to climate change, practicing pole and line fishing will promote Blue Economy and sustainable use of the oceans,” she said.
