Police has identified the suspect arrested for impeding the investigation into the fatal stabbing of a young man from Addu City in June as a lawyer.

Mohamed Zayan Moosa, 21, Solid, S. Feydhoo, was stabbed multiple times in a gang fight that broke out in Addu's Feydhoo district at approximately 03:00 am on June 1.

He died within hours after he was taken to the Addu Equatorial Hospital.

Prosecutor General’s Office (PG Office) filed murder charges against four minors arrested in connection to the case on October 9.

Police had arrested a 37-year-old male for influencing one of the minors arrested in the case, impeding the murder investigation, and obstructing police duties.

In a press conference Wednesday, Head of Death and Homicide Investigation Unit, Inspector of Police Mohamed Samih identified the suspect as a lawyer.

“He had been influencing one of the minors arrested in the case by abusing his authority and official duties,” said Samih.

Samih said he was released from police custody after the investigation. But that he has been reported to the Bar Council based on the findings of the investigators.

Total 11 suspects were arrested in the case, including the four minors charged with murder.

Samih said five people, aged 15-19 years, were involved in destroying the evidence.

Samih said the attack was preplanned, and was part of a serious of fights between two rival gangs in Feydhoo.

Zayan was killed in a retaliatory attack, he said.

He also said Zayan had been conscious when police arrived at the scene, and that he had identified his assailants.
